A delightful village in the heart of Devon with an old-fashioned community spirit. It has cobbled streets, thatched cottages, courtyards and welcoming pubs, it is a pleasure to wander in this unspoilt part of Devon. Chulmleigh is a year-round destination with summer gardens and winter walks. The Tarka Trail starts in Eggesford Forest on the banks of the River Taw, it follows a route through woodland, and offers views. Chulmleigh is particularly good for birdwatching, you can spot all sorts along the riverbanks. Fishing is a popular sport with salmon and trout in the rivers and coarse fishing on Catham Lakes. Chulmleigh is midway between the national parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor and within easy reach of the rugged north Devon coast.
Devon has quite a few claims to fame such as being the backdrop to many films, including; War Horse - starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, and directed by Steven Spielberg. Agatha Christie went on to become a best-selling novelist, Reverend John Russell developed the Jack Russell Terrier, Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world, and Sir Walter Raleigh became a famous explorer.
South Devon is home to over 20 miles of Torbay coastline which is otherwise known as the 'English Riviera'. Brixton, Paignton and Torquay are the three Riviera towns and are great places to enjoy a day at the seaside. The Dartmoor National Park can be found in Devon and offers visitors a dramatic moorland landscape, ancient woodland, rare wildlife and notable influences, such as the location for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes case 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.
