The historic town of Newport is commonly known as the capital of the Isle of Wight and is home to the annual Isle of Wight festival which takes place in June in Seaclose Park. For those seeking history and culture, pay a visit to Carisbrooke Castle, a 12th century fort famous for serving as a prison to Charles I after his defeat in the English Civil War. There is a wide variety of attractions and museums in Newport, including the Quay Arts Centre, Owl and Monkey Haven, Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum to name but a few. Kids will love the Robin Hill Country Adventure Park, full of rides, adventure play areas and displays.

Yarmouth, with its busy harbour, is one of the main gateways to the island and is very well known for its fishing opportunities. Walkers and cyclists can take advantage of the track along the old railway, running from Yarmouth to the town of Freshwater. For a family day out, visit Yarmouth castle or Fort Victoria which now houses a Marine Aquarium, an Underwater Archaeology Centre, a Planetarium and a Model Railway.

The seaside resort of Shanklin is a must for beach lovers with its lovely stretch of golden sands where you can spend a lovey relaxing day or partake in the water sports on offer. Or if you prefer parks and gardens, pay a visit to Rylstone Gardens or the Shanklin Chine and Historic Gorge with its dramatic waterfall. The Shanklin Old Village provides to perfect backdrop for you to while away the hours meandering around the thatched cottages and unique selection of shops.

At the most northerly point of the Isle of Wight, lies the town of Cowes which is split into Cowes and East Cowes by the River Medina. The town is well known for sailing with the world’s largest sailing regatta “Cowes Week” taking place here annually. The town offers maritime museums, award winning beaches, scenic walks and vibrant shopping areas.

One of the Isle of Wights most well-known attractions is the Needles Park, situated near Totland Bay. Here visitors can take in the stunning views, enjoy a chairlift ride from the top of the Alum Bay cliffs down to Alum Bay Beach, and take in the sand cliffs – visitors can make their own coloured sand souvenirs to take home. Other attractions include a 4D cinema experience, Alum Bay Glass and the Isle of Wight Sweet Manufactory.

Seaview is an Edwardian resort with a beach offering boating activities and water sports; with its golden sands and excellent views, it is also popular with walkers. A very popular attraction here is the Seaview Wildlife Encounter where visitors have the opportunity to meet Meerkats, Wallabies and many other animals. The park is an ideal family day out and features several hands-on presentations throughout the day.

Ventnor, a seaside resort on the South coast of the island, experiences its own microclimate due to its sheltered location and has therefore allowed the growth of many subtropical plants which can be seen at the Ventnor Botanic Garden. Due to the warmer climate, the beach at Ventnor is popular for swimming and sunbathing. If you want to escape from it all, take a trip to Steephill Cove, a picturesque, unspoilt cove with rock pools, clear water and beautiful scenery.

In addition to Yarmouth, Ryde is also one of the main gateways to the island. It is the largest town in the Isle of Wight and has six miles of sandy beaches, making it an ideal resort for a summer holiday. It also has a wide array of shops, bars and restaurants, not to mention plenty of entertainment for the kids including funfairs and a canoe lake.
